I didn’t always coach in this way. Before I began coaching women using my current style of Transformative Coaching, one of the first things my client and I did was discuss the goals they wanted to achieve.
Then I helped them make their goals SMART. Perhaps you’ve practiced this or worked with a Coach that guided you in this method.
This is what my training and certification as a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach focused on. It was the foundation for my coaching practice but the women I worked with would make a certain amount of traction then find themselves frustrated with their progress. I found this to be true for myself and the goals I wanted to achieve.

Beyond any of my credentials, my true qualification stems from my own transformation. I’ve experienced the liberating power of self-awareness and the freedom to choose empowering beliefs.
The BIGGEST and MOST powerful transformation occurred for me when I realized how much I’d been listening to my inner-critic and my negative thoughts. For years!!
I was so used to hearing them in my head and feeling them in my heart that I believed them. Add in the beliefs I’d been told from others to the stack of my own and it felt insurmountable.
I’d created beliefs around what others didn’t say!

Transformative Coaching vs Traditional Coaching
In most traditional coaching models there will be a focus and emphasis on overcoming limiting behaviors, with quite often a bit of digging into the past to discover where it started, before a ‘rah rah’ process of imagining the future you, without that behavior, willing you through to the goal.
That’s ok if you don’t mind bringing up painful memories each time you want to get from Point A to Point B in a set period of time, but little benefit is derived when you want to overcome or create something else in your life. You often have to start the coaching process all over again.
Transformative Coaches embrace the core assumptions that all people have access to innate wisdom they were born with. They all have innate, perfect mental health and infinite potential.
The coach-client relationship in transformative coaching is not an ‘expert to client’ one, it’s a relationship of a soul to soul one, often intimate and reflective and never follows a set program or script – it’s about insightful discussions from a place of safety and non-judgement.
Transformative Coaches are people who have come to their profession through experiencing their own insightful transformations and understanding from a place of difficulty. A friend who gently points you to your true nature, to help you see what is possible for you and all human beings.
The beauty of this is, once you experience it for yourself, you can use your own understanding to guide you through anything in life.
